Separate noise from softness

Noise looks like random grain in skies, walls, skin, or shadows. Softness appears as weak edges on text, hair, or object boundaries. A photo can have both, but the two problems need different treatment.

Use this decision sequence

1. Inspect a smooth area

Zoom to 100% and look at a plain wall or sky. If sharpening makes the texture look crunchy, the source contains noise or compression that should not be mistaken for useful detail.

2. Inspect a real edge

Check a clear boundary such as a product outline or a letter. If the edge is soft while the surrounding area is clean, try a low sharpening strength and compare before and after.

3. Process noise conservatively

When using another editor for noise reduction, keep the original and make a copy. Strong smoothing can remove skin texture, fabric detail, and small lettering. The goal is a cleaner input, not a plastic-looking image.

4. Sharpen once at the end

Apply a restrained pass after resizing or noise reduction. Inspect high-contrast edges at 100%, then check the image at its final display size. Lower the strength if halos, ringing, or amplified grain appear.

Worked example

A low-light product photo has visible grain on the background and a slightly soft label. First reduce the background noise on a copy. Then apply a low sharpening setting and compare the label, product edge, and smooth background. If the label is still unreadable, sharpening is not a reliable way to reconstruct missing letters; use the original artwork or retake the photo.

What this tool can and cannot establish

A clearer edge can improve the appearance of mild softness. It cannot prove that a blurred detail is factually recovered, and it cannot make a badly exposed or motion-blurred source reliable. Keep the original and choose the version that remains honest at the intended size.
