What a halo looks like
Sharpening increases local contrast around edges. Applied carefully, it makes a slightly soft photo easier to read. Applied too strongly, it creates a bright rim on one side of an edge and a dark rim on the other. These halos are especially visible around a skyline, dark hair against a pale wall, lettering, and product silhouettes.
Step-by-step workflow
1. Diagnose the softness
Use local sharpening for mild softness or low edge contrast. It is not the same as motion deblurring, refocusing, or upscaling. If a face moved during the exposure or the camera focused on the background, sharpening may only emphasize the blur.
2. Keep the source file
Work on a copy and avoid repeated JPEG saves. Each lossy export can add block edges and ringing that a later sharpening pass will exaggerate.
3. Begin with restrained strength
AI Sharpen Image currently offers a local strength range from 0 to 2.5 and starts at 1.15. For an already usable photo, begin lower, around 0.6–0.9, and increase only if the important edges still look soft. These values are controls in this tool, not standardized units shared by other editors.
4. Inspect at 100% zoom
Use the before/after comparison and inspect:
- dark objects against a bright sky or wall;
- small text and straight product edges;
- skin, hair, fabric, grass, and other fine textures;
- smooth shadow areas where noise can become more visible.
If the image looks impressive only when reduced but shows rims, crunchy skin, or grain at 100%, lower the strength.
5. Check at final display size
A web thumbnail, a full-width image, and a print have different needs. After the 100% artifact check, resize the preview to the real destination. Stop when the subject reads clearly at that size; extra sharpening is not automatically extra quality.
Worked example
Consider a 1600 × 1200 product photo that is slightly soft but correctly focused. Process a copy at 0.7 strength. Compare the logo, metallic rim, and the transition between the product and white background. If the logo becomes clearer with no visible outline, try 0.85. If a gray or bright rim appears at 1.0, return to the lower version. The smallest effective setting is usually the safer export.
Why noise becomes stronger
Noise contains small local changes that can resemble edges to a sharpening operation. Raising edge contrast can therefore make grain and JPEG artifacts more obvious. If the source is noisy, reduce noise before the final sharpening step, but avoid heavy smoothing that removes real texture.
When sharpening is the wrong tool
- Directional streaks caused by camera or subject movement.
- A severely out-of-focus subject.
- A tiny image that must be delivered at several times its dimensions.
- Missing or unreadable text that must be factually accurate.
